SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - March 1944 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder, crest-stage gage, and rock weir. Datum of gage is 900.04 ft above NAVD 1988 (levels by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers). Prior to July 31, 1957, nonrecording gage at site 850 ft downstream at datum of 912.45 ft above NGVD of 1929. Aug. 1, 1957, to June 6, 1966, nonrecording gage at downstream site at datum of 910.45 ft above NGVD of 1929. June 7, 1966, to Oct. 31, 1968, nonrecording gage at downstream site at datum of 909.45 ft above NGVD of 1929. Nov. 1, 1968 to Sept. 3, 2003, water-stage recorder, crest-stage gage, and metal v-notch sharp-crested weir at site 400 ft downstream at same datum.
REMARKS - Records are considered good except for estimated discharges which are poor and other periods as noted. For records status prior to October 1, 2013, see remarks printed in annual water-data reports. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood-control dam (located 770 ft upstream) controls flow of river, but daily flow is not highly regulated. Data-collection platform and gage-height telemeter at station. Daily discharges generally represent run of the river except for high flow and during gate maintenance. Statistics are not computed using data prior to the construction of the flood-control dam in 1969. Peak discharge and stage prior to the construction of the flood-control reservoir occurred April 15, 1954, at a stage of 12.50 ft (datum then in use) and a discharge of 7,000 cfs.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage since at least 1894, that of Sept. 18, 1942, 19.98 ft, with datum at 909.45 ft above NGVD of 1929, from floodmarks, discharge, 33,000 ft³/s estimated by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on basis of slope-area measurement by Geological Survey of peak discharge of 39,000 ft³/s at Elmwood, drainage area, 91.9 mi².
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 2011 to current year. Archived data September 2001 to September 2011.
INSTRUMENTATION - A Campbell Scientific model 107 water temperature thermistor, installed in 2001 is used as backup for temperature. A FTS Digitemp was installed 8/29/2016 and is used as primary probe. Temperature is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and connected to the CR10 data-logger. Unit values are recorded at 15-minute intervals with automatic data retrieval. Recording equipment is housed in the gage structure with the stage-recording equipment. The temperature probe is located at the orifice.
