01173000 WARE RIVER AT INTAKE WORKS NEAR BARRE, MA
LOCATION - Lat 42°23'28", long 72°03'56" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Worcester County, MA, Hydrologic Unit 01080204, on right bank, 0.25 miles downstream from diversion dam, at Ware River intake works, 2.7 mi downstream from Burnshirt River, 3 mi southeast of Barre, and at mile 29.1.
DRAINAGE AREA - 96.3 mi².

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - January 1928 to current year. Prior to October 1977, published as Ware River at Coldbrook.
GAGE - Data Collection Platform with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 631.28 ft above NAVD 1988, estimated from topographic map. Prior to May 21, 2020, datum of gage reported as 630 ft above NGVD 1929, estimated from topographic map. Datum of gage previously reported as 5.65 ft below NGVD 1929 at location 0.2 mi upstream.

REMARKS - Records good, except those for estimated daily discharges, which are fair. Figures of daily mean discharge include diversions by the MWRA during the period October 15 to June 14 of each year and at other times for emergency flood-control purposes as authorized by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; diversion began in March 1931. Flow regulated by Barre Falls Reservoir 4.3 mi upstream (see table with station 01172500) since 1958. Diversion at times since 1955 from 6.5 mi² upstream for municipal supply of Fitchburg. Computations of daily discharge are made in cooperation with Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Water-Supply Protection, and Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, which collected Venturi-meter records.

The maximum peak flow of 14,000 cfs on Sept. 21, 1938 based on computation of flow over dam. The maximum peak stage of 664.28 ft; elevation, in feet above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929, for flow over dam.
